Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) is a marine science laboratory that specializes in marine plastic pollution that is also invested in creating methods and protocols based in equity, humility, a sense of place, and anti colonial justice. Artists-in-residence would undergo laboratory training and participate in some of CLEAR’s scientific work, including weekly lab meetings. Artists will work with other lab members to think about what kind of work should be done, how it can be done ethically and collaboratively, and how it should be shared and circulated. It is expected that CLEAR will host between 1-3 artist-lab members from January to August 2020.
Fine artists or artisans are not eligible considering that CLEAR does not have the capacity to hold creative productions that involve the use of oil paints or other substances that could be harmful to the work inside the lab, that is why poetry, storytelling, photography, and visual methods are best suited for this position. CLEAR’s space is not designated for single person’s activities in the lab whether they are a scientist or an artist. Applicants applying for this position should be able to work well in groups and easily get along well with others.
Chosen applicants will be offered a stipend of USD 1836, plus an amazing trip to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador (capped at USD 918).
Please note: housing for the duration of the stay will not be covered.
