SIWI is a water institute. They leverage knowledge and their convening power to strengthen water governance for a just, prosperous, and sustainable future.

The idea that became Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) stems from three linked events in Stockholm in 1991. The Stockholm Water Festival invited the public to celebrate water on the streets of Stockholm, the Stockholm Water Symposium gathered some two hundred scientists to discuss global water challenges, and the Stockholm Water Prize, under the patronage of H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, was awarded for the first time, in recognition of outstanding achievements in water-related activities.

A candidate for the Stockholm Water Prize shall have attained outstanding achievements of lasting significance for sustainable use and protection of the world’s water resources. The results achieved by the candidate shall have proven impact or great potential and provide stimulation for further important contributions to the conservation and protection of water resources and to improved health and well-being of the planet’s inhabitants and ecosystems. The main achievements of the candidate should be within one or both of the following categories:

For both categories, great achievements in outreach and awareness-raising are considered merits. This includes education and training of students, water professionals or communities as well as dissemination of information to and awareness-raising of decision-makers and the general public.

Anyone can submit a nomination for the Stockholm Water Prize, however, self-nominations or nominations by persons with direct professional or family ties to the candidate are not permitted. The initial nomination begins by submitting the name of the nominee along with a brief (500 words max.) statement of accomplishment.

To promote excellent water achievements and inspire future water-wise action, SIWI awards prizes to heroes who have contributed to a water-wise world.

The winner of the Stockholm Water Prize is announced every year in March, usually in conjunction with World Water Day 22 March. A prize ceremony and Royal Banquet is held at the Stockholm City Hall as part of World Water Week in August. The laureate is also addressing the Week’s Opening Plenary and a special Stockholm Water Prize Symposium is organized as part of the Week. In addition to the global acknowledgment and visibility, the Stockholm Water Prize laureate receives a specially designed sculpture and 1 million SEK.
