Australian Book Review welcomes entries in the twelfth Calibre Essay Prize. The Calibre Prize, founded in 2007, is one of the world's leading prizes for an original non-fiction essay. It is now worth a total of $7,500. Entry is open to anyone in the world who is writing in English. The winning essay will be published in ABR’s 400th issue in April 2018.
First Prize: $5,000
Second Prize: $2,500
Essays must range from 3,000 to 6,000 words and be written in English.
Deadline for entries is 15 January 2018
This year the Calibre Essay Prize will be judged by Andrea Goldsmith, Phillipa McGuinness, and Peter Rose (ABR Editor and CEO).
Entries must be submitted online. Before entering the Calibre Essay Prize, all essayists must read the Terms and Conditions. Please read the Frequently Asked Questions page before contacting us with queries about the Calibre Prize.
1.Entries are welcome from writers anywhere in the world.
2. There is no age limit.
3.ABR staff, board members, and editorial advisers are not eligible to enter. ABRcontributors and volunteers may enter.
4. Each entry must be accompanied by an entry fee of AU$25, or AU$15 for current ABRsubscribers. To qualify for the lower entry fee, entrants must hold a current one-year subscription to our print edition or ABR Online or be a full-time student.
5. If you don’t already subscribe to ABR Online, you can purchase a one-year subscription and enter a single essay for a total of AU$60. You can then enter subsequent essays at the discounted rate of $15 each.
6. If you don’t already subscribe to ABR’s print edition you can purchase a one-year subscription and enter a single essay for the following rates: $95 (Australia), $150 (New Zealand/Asia), or $170 (ROW).

*Non-subscribers will receive access to ABR Online free of charge for four months. Eligible entrants will be contacted when this complimentary subscription has been activated.
