Kyoto Startup Summer School, 2018

Kyoto was once the capital and the largest city in Japan, a vibrant imperial city full of craftsmen, artists, and merchants. While it lost both titles to Tokyo in recent years, Kyoto remains the cultural heart of Japan with over 2000 temples and shrines. In addition to being the center of tourism in Japan, Kyoto is an important hub for the information technology and electronics industry in Japan. This is the city where alongside traditional craft workshops, one can find world class companies and startups. It is also the home to Nintendo and birthplace of Super Mario and Pokemon. In recent years, the IoT movement is gaining traction, building on the city's existing expertise. Kyoto is also a university town boasting 37 universities and 140,000 students which creates a dynamic city life. This is the city where you can find some of the best food in Japan from cheap student ramen restaurants to Michelin-starred establishments.

Opportunities

Kyoto Startup Summer School is composed of different modules taught and facilitated by diverse teaching team members. While the detailed program for KS³ 2018 is not finalized yet, there are some exciting modules that are planed to incorporate: workshops, lectures, startup weekend, mixers, panel discussions, company visits,

Eligibility:

  • Current University Students (Graduate and Undergraduate)
  • Recent University Graduates (Graduated in 2015 or later)
  • Working for a Startup (Company younger than 3 years and less than 25 people)
  • Freelancers with the intent of creating a startup

Tuition fee

Tuition fee-40,000 yen (approximately 360 USD or 300 Euros) + Startup Weekend fee

While the Startup Weekend Module is an integral part of KS³, the organizing body is slightly different and the fees will have to be charged separately. In the years past, Team of Kyoto done its best to reduce the cost (5000~6000 yen) which does include all meals for the weekend (7 meals).

There are many costs involved in running KS³ such as the honorariums for the lecturers and materials for the workshops. Much of the cost is covered through the partnerships, but Summer School expects from you to contribute to running the program as well.

Additional Information

Despite the long-surviving stereotypes from the 80s and early 90s bubble era, Japan is no longer an expensive country to visit. These days, the cost of living in Kyoto is on par with similarly sized Western European or North American cities and definitely cheaper than any Nordic countries. For a bed in a hostel, expect to spend between 2000-3000 yen while a single in a guest house can go for 5000 yen and hotels slightly above that (of course you can splurge too if you have the means). Obviously sharing housing with people will make it cheaper, and in the years past, participants have shared larger AirBnBs to save lodging costs. Cheap lunch and dinner can be had for 300-600 yen though your satisfaction will be higher if you spend a bit more. Transportation within the city is about 200 yen per trip. 1 USD is roughly 110 yen and 1 EUR is roughly 135 yen (or for those mathematically challenged, just lop off two zeros).
