The MSc programmes in Theoretical Physics and in Mathematical Physics are designed to prepare students for a research career in academia or industry by introducing advanced ideas and techniques that are applicable in a wide range of research areas, while emphasising the underlying physics concepts. Both MScs build upon dedicated postgraduate courses and integrated Masters (MPhys) programmes.
The MSc programmes form a core part of the activities of the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics (link is external). Students are taught by members of the Higgs Centre, and they carry out research projects supervised by members of the Centre, as part of their Dissertation. Students take part in the Centre's activities, including guest lectures, bi-weekly colloquia, and workshops involving physicists from around the world.
The two degrees have a similar structure. The MP degree requires students to take a number of Mathematics courses, which can be up to 40% of the taught course element. Contrastingly, TP students have more freedom to take a wider range of optional courses.
The programme structure is the same for both MScs. Each is a full-time, 180-point, taught Master’s programme.
The taught component of the programme has two elements:
1. Two compulsory courses plus a selection of core courses, which bring all students to an advanced level in subjects such as: general relativity; cosmology; statistical physics; condensed matter physics; quantum field theory and the Standard Model of particle physics.
Mathematical Physics students will also take a selection of courses in pure/applied mathematics.
2. A choice from a wider pool of courses, including specialist courses in mathematics, computing and climate science
Following the taught component of the programme, students undertake a 3-month research project drawn from the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics, which leads to a dissertation.
The Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics was established by the University of Edinburgh following the discovery of a candidate Higgs boson at CERN. The Centre was named after Professor Peter Higgs, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in October 2013. The Higgs Centre carries out research in Theoretical Physics over a wide range of topics, ranging from the very small to the very large: astronomy, condensed matter physics, biological physics, cosmology, string theory, nuclear physics and particle physics.
The MSc programmes in Theoretical Physics and Mathematical Physics are core part of the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics. Courses are taught and projects are supervised by researchers in the Higgs Centre.
MSc students have the opportunity to attend Higgs Centre colloqiua and workshops.
The entry requirement is a UK 2:1 honours degree in Physics or Mathematics (assuming it has sufficient theoretical-physics content), or international equivalent qualifications recognized under the University’s admissions policy.

The committee recognise that many Mathematics students (and indeed also some Physics students) will not have covered all of these topics at this level, and we are therefore quite flexible in our admissions process. Every application is considered individually, and a committee may accept students who have studied a significant subset of these topics. Degrees in engineering, chemistry, geosciences, etc, are unlikely to be acceptable preparation for these MSc programmes, but they are aware that there are many exceptions. You may take up to three Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) Level 10 courses as part of your MSc curriculum in order to fill any gaps in your knowledge of undergraduate theoretical physics. In many cases these can be taken alongside the more advanced courses.

Tuition fees in 2017/18 (One Year Full-time)
You should normally apply for the MSc programme before applying for any scholarships.
Most scholarships require applicants to apply via MyEd. Most of them also have deadlines in as early as April and May. You are encouraged to apply as early as possible and also check individual websites for details.
Two Higgs Centre MSc Prize Scholarships will be awarded to students on the MSc programmes in Mathematical Physics and Theoretical Physics for academic year 2018-19. Each scholarship has a value of £5,000. The value of the award will be deducted from tuition fees.
The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit to students of any nationality. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first-class honours degree or its overseas equivalent. The closing date for scholarship applications is 1st May 2018.
