ESRIC SUMMER SCHOOL

The 2019 course, running from July 15th - 19th, will open for applications via the RMS ESRIC Event Webpage in January 2019. The submission window will close on March 31st so to avoid disappointment apply early! Information on this years course can be found in our News section as well as reviews of previous years, an overview of the course is below:

Each year ESRIC plays host to its annual Super-Resolution Summer School, an advanced imaging training course which takes place over 5 days here in Edinburgh. The course is filled with informal talks from world renowned super-resolution professionals, paired with intensive technology workshops designed to allow participants to apply the theoretical knowledge they have gained and to quiz the application specialists about the practical aspects of performing super-resolution microscopy. The summer school covers all of the available super-resolution imaging systems including single molecule localisation, stimulated emission depletion and structured illumination microscopies. As well as the core workshops the course includes smaller 'bitesize' sessions to cover a broader range of expertise surrounding the acquisition which include sample preparation, analysis and standardisation.

The ESRIC Super-Resolution Summer School is aimed at researchers from PhD up to Professor who want to learn more about the techniques, how best to apply them to their research question and to meet fellow scientists in the super-resolution community to exchange knowledge and ideas. The networking aspect of the course is something we value when organising the event, delegates have ample time to connect through social events and also have time to get on-site advice regarding current projects, fields of interest and any other queries through Q&A sessions held throughout the week with our fantastic speakers.

The summer school is hosted by both the ESRIC facilities at Heriot-Watt University and the IGMM at Edinburgh University in July / August each year and runs for 5 days. Anyone with prior knowledge of fluorescence microscopy is welcome to apply. The course is resedential as we welcome researchers from across the world each year. ESRIC runs this exciting opportunity in assossiation with several partners/sponsors and are honored to be working closely with the Royal MIcroscopial Society in organising our 2018 course and beyond.

Applications and registration

As part of the application process, delegates are required to write a letter of motivation, describing your current use of microscopy, how you hope to use super-resolution in the future in your research and what you hope to gain from the course.  This information will then be used as a basis for selection for the course.

There are 36 places on the course and applications are processed through a rolling admission. The rolling admission dates are as follows:

Round 1 - 11 January 2019 to 31 January 2019

Round 2 - 1 February 2019 to 28 February  2019

Round 3 - 1 March 2019 to 31 March 2019

There is no quota for each round and as delegates will be selected based on their letter of motivation and application, it is possible the course will fill up within the first round so it is recommended that you apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Delegates will be contacted after each round of applications confirming a place, if selected.

Dr Alison Dun

Heriot-Watt UniversityAlison is the facility manager for the Edinburgh Super-Resolution Imaging Consortium (ESRIC) and is based at the Heriot-Watt University site. Alison completed her PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2013 where she used a wide range of advanced imaging techniques to study cell membrane biology. Alison now works in an interdisciplinary environment, running the imaging facility at the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Bioengineering and Biophysics at Heriot-Watt University.

Venue for the Course

The ESRIC Summer School is based at the Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Campus, Edinburgh, EH14 4AS.
Delegates will also visit ESRIC’s second facility at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine at the University of Edinburgh during the week.

Accommodation

The accommodation is likley to be on campus in an en-suite student room.

Delegates can check in from the Sunday afternoon.

Lunch and refreshments are included in your registration fee.
