The United Nations offers an internship opportunity in the Operations Support Division, Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) in the USA. The internship is for a minimum duration of four months and can be extended up to six months. Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member for 35 hours over five days a week, full time.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the various stages of systems development using project management methodology.
  • Participate in training activities, including the preparation of training material and user documentation, and compilation of relevant information.
  • Support towards strengthened business relationships to include coordination of responses to client requirements and the delivery of OICT services and solutions.
  • Provide support towards the development of communications, social media, and marketing materials, using design, publishing and/or video production software.
  • Support the improvement of performance management mechanisms and the development of cost-benefit analyses to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of OICT services and solutions.
  • Support towards the capture, management, and analysis of data/information.
  • Support the design and development of innovative representations of data/information.
  • Conduct research and present findings on information technology, broadcast, television, multimedia, video conferencing, audio/visual related areas, such as innovative use of technology, knowledge management, information security, cybercrime, etc.
  • Attend and support the preparation of meetings, conferences, workshops, and other events.
  • Support the activities of OICT as needed as deemed necessary by their supervisor.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Information and Communications Technology, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, Marketing, Communications and/or Library Science.
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); in Information and Communications Technology, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, Marketing, Communications and/or Library Science.
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
    • If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of fulltime studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in Information and Communications Technology, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, Marketing, Communications and/or Library Science.
  • Be proficient in standard office automation equipment (e.g. computer, scanner, printer, etc.) and software systems (e.g. Microsoft Office or similar; Lotus Notes or similar, etc.).
  • Be familiar with cutting-edge technology and tools and/or have experience with social networking and collaboration platforms.
  • Excellent command of the English language. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
