Description

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research (GEI) is pleased to announce the fourth Georg Arnhold International Summer School, which will take place in Braunschweig, Germany, from 24 to 28 July 2017.

The Summer School will bring together early-career scholars, senior researchers and practitioners to critically explore theories and methods, curricula and educational media, the role and training of teachers of Education in Emergencies (EiE), focusing on all educational levels as well as formal and non-formal educational practices.

The GEI thus invites original contributions that draw upon diverse contexts, theories, and methods to shed light on questions pertaining to, but not restricted to, the following aspects:

Theories and Methods of Education in Emergencies
Which theories can render research findings applicable to different contexts? How can we tackle ethical questions such as the Eurocentric perspective on conflicts, humanitarian aid and education in emergencies? Which methods appear promising for research and evaluation of EiE programs or materials?

Curricula and Educational Media
Who has access to formal or non-formal programs for EiE and how are they implemented? What are the curricula contents for EiE; how are they developed and by whom? What is the potential of new education technologies in EiE?

Teachers and Teacher Training for Education in Emergencies
Who trains the teachers and how? What kind of teacher training is appropriate for these contexts? How can we validate pupil or teacher qualifications? What is the role of voluntary work in EiE?

The week-long Summer School will provide an interdisciplinary and international forum that will allow participants to debate and critically reflect upon key research questions, methods, findings, and their implications. The academic program of the Summer School will include lectures and workshops by renowned experts, offering participants the opportunity to widen their research perspectives and improve their methodological competencies.
