United Nations is announcing an internship opportunity for students and graduates at the OHCHR office in New York. The office of the high commissioner for human rights in New York represents the high commissioner for human rights at United Nations Headquarters and ensures the effective incorporation of norms, standards, methodologies, policies, United Nations human rights system mechanisms in New York, existing intergovernmental bodies, policy development processes, operational oversight activities, and media initiatives.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You should be enrolled in a graduate school program like master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree program like bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field, OR have graduated with a university degree.
  • If you are selected, You must commence the internship within a one-year period from the date of graduation.
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship program through any relevant academic and/or practical experience in human rights issues.
  • If you are able to identify related problems in your political, ethnic, racial, gender equality and socio-economic dimensions and have a good knowledge of institutional mandates of human rights organizations, it will be a good added value for you.
  • An applicant who bears to a staff member any other family relationship may be engaged as an intern, provided that he or she shall not be assigned to the same work unit of the staff member nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member. 
  • The internship is an unpaid (full-time) opportunity and the intern must adhere to the established weekly working hours of the duty station where the assignment is located, including one hour for lunch.

Your Responsibilities:

  1. The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission to work for the protection of all human rights for all people and to help empower people to realize their rights.
  2. Daily responsibilities of OHCHR New York interns will depend on the individual's background and specific duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Researching a variety of human rights themes and related issues, including analysis of information, developments, and trends related to human rights, assisting in the preparation of reports, background materials, and other relevant documents.
  • Assisting with the organization of meetings, seminars, and related events.
  • Attends meetings and preparing summaries of the proceedings.
  • Assisting in the preparation of outreach material such as talking points, correspondence, and presentations, and performs other related duties requested by the supervisor, as appropriate.
