King’s Academy is offering a job opportunity to hire a Dean of Students to guide and shape student life at King’s Academy in Jordan. Deeply committed to the mission and vision of the institution and with great care for young people, the Dean of Students is a skilled communicator across constituencies (students, parents, employees), a role model for students, and a mission-oriented manager of the Office of Student Life. Comfortable with complexity, the Dean of Students leads the culture of student life in a community that draws students and faculty from an extraordinary diversity of backgrounds. Inspired and inspiring, the Dean of Students loves being among adolescents and is on the front line of a school that changes lives by opening access to new opportunities and building connections and relationships across a range of differences.

Main Responsibilities:

The Dean of Students, who will report to the Head of School, will have the following primary duties and responsibilities:

Lead and Shape Student Culture, Success and Wellness

  • Lead the ongoing development of a mission-oriented student body culture grounded in King’s Academy’s five guiding principles: respect, love of learning, responsibility, an integrated life, and global citizenship. 
  • Work with the Head of School to develop a strong sense of community among all students of the school, including developing strategies to support and integrate the experience of day students.
  • Lead and chair review process for all students of the school.
  • Lead the disciplinary and academic honor process.
  • Assist the Director of Wellness and Advising in directing the counseling services and ensuring the well-being of all students at the school.
  • Participate in the academy’s admissions process.
  • Collaborate with the Security and Public Safety Director on all matters of student safety and security.

Lead and Manage the Office of Student Life

  • Oversee and mentor the Class Deans and Dean of Residential Life.
  • Oversee OSL administrative staff.
  • Develop and monitor the OSL annual budget.

Manage Parent Relations Concerning Student Life

  • Work closely with the Head of School in communicating the school’s expectations of its students to students and their parents.
  • Communicate with parents about individual and collective student culture, success and wellness, both in times of concern and celebration.

Support and Develop Faculty

  • Work with the Dean of the Faculty to develop a clear approach to faculty support for responsibilities beyond the classroom.
  • Participate in faculty hiring.
  • Participate in new faculty orientation.

Other Responsibilities

  • Teach at least one course per term.
  • Supervise students in dorms and/or study halls one evening a week.
  • Attend school meetings, faculty meetings, and department meetings.
  • Attend programmatic school events such as Parents Weekend, Student Orientation, Commencement, test preparation, etc.
  • Take turns as School Officer in Charge (SOC) leading weekend and evening teams on campus.
  • Participate in the weekend teams that take turns providing programming and support for boarding students throughout the year. 
  • Perform any academic, supervisory, educational or other activities that are typically recognized (internationally, regionally or locally) as part of the job title or as part of boarding school activities and work.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications and Prerequisites:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred
  • Teaching experience
  • Experience in a student leadership post
  • Boarding school residential experience
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills
  • A strong capacity to deal with critical situations in a timely manner and make sound decisions
  • King’s Academy experience (a plus, not a requirement)
