The University of Kent in the United Kingdom announced the Global Challenges Doctoral Centre (GCDC): Engaging citizens in Post-Conflict Reconstruction scholarship for new postgraduate research applicants. This exciting PhD opportunity involves a collaboration between the Conflict Analysis Research Centre, at the University of Kent, UK and the Centre for Peace and Sustainable Development (SeeD) in Nicosia, Cyprus.

About the Program:

This project will:

Identify the attributes and attitudes of citizens who are willing to participate in peace movements and post-conflict reconstruction in ODA countries.
Explore the skills and competencies of these citizens.
Ask how skills, competencies, and attitudes are developed in order to promote engaged citizens.
Employ data on citizen attitudes and behavior drawn from a range of post-conflict settings.

Eligibility criteria:

A background in political science, international relations, conflict studies, psychology, sociology or development studies.
A strong aptitude for using social science quantitative methods in an international and comparative context.
The communications skills to work with a range of potential impact partners (such as the US Institute of Peace, UNDP, World Bank agencies).
GCDC scholars are required to be based at the Canterbury or Medway campuses for the duration of their studies except for research-related overseas visits.
The student will be expected to actively engage with the Global Challenges Doctoral Centre (GCDC) and participate in the Centre’s training and events throughout the duration of their PhD.
Candidates applying for a PhD degree must normally hold a good Honours degree (First or 2:1) or a Master’s Degree (at Merit or Distinction) in a relevant, appropriate subject, or the equivalent from an internationally recognized institution.
The University of Kent requires all non-native speakers of English to reach a minimum standard of proficiency in written and spoken English before beginning a postgraduate degree.

The scholarship call is open to applicants from all nationalities. Applicants paying overseas fees can still apply: four GCDC scholarships will be offered at the international rate and some academic schools may be able to support other applicants financially beyond the UKRI level.

Benefits:

GCDC scholars will receive the following:

Annual stipend at UKRI rates for 3.5 years (TBC but this was £15,009 for 2019/20);
Annual tuition fees at UKRI Home/EU rates for 3.5 years (£4,327 for 2019/20);
A Research Training Support Grant of £1,500 per year for the first 3 years of study; and
Specialized interdisciplinary GCDC cohort training activities.
