CERN is offering a competition in science for high-school students from all around the world. The student will be like a scientist and make a scientific experiment with his team and apply for the competition. They should think of particle physics and think of a simple and creative experiment.

 Eligibility Criteria:

  • The competition is open to teams of high-school students from all around the world who, if they win, are invited (with up to two adult team coaches) to DESY to run their experiment
  •  Teams must have at least five students with at least one adult team coach, but there is no upper limit to a team’s size (although just nine students per winning team will be invited to DESY).
  • Teams may be composed of students from a single school or a number of schools working together.

Which experiments can be proposed?

  • Your team is totally free with respect to the experiment that you propose as long as it does not raise any safety concerns.
  • The technical feasibility will be an important criterion for the selection of the winners.

 Terms and Conditions:

  1. The deadline for team registrations and submission of the proposals and videos is on 31 March 2020.
  2. The BL4S competition is intended for students around the 15-19 age bracket who, at the time of submitting their entry to the competition, are currently attending a secondary school.
  3. CERN & DESY will select two winning proposals from the submissions. The winning teams will be invited to DESY to execute their proposals as collaborative experiments with the other winning team.
  4. Participants who, at the time of registration, are under 18 or are under the legal age of majority in the country where they are applying, must have the consent of their parent(s)  before registering.
  5. Any participant that subsequently travels to DESY as a member team will need to ensure that she/he has health and accident insurance cover that is adequate for Germany
  6. Respect copyright! do not include third-party content in your proposal without written permission. this applies to still images, video, and music.
  7. By entering your proposal in the competition, you consent to its subsequent potential publication by CERN and its use as part of their scientific activities
  8. CERN may make interviews, recordings and images of participants and their activities in the context of this competition.
  9. CERN may request further information from you if they consider that this information would be helpful for the evaluation of your proposal.
  10. CERN reserve the right to postpone, cancel or modify the competition at any time and for any reason
  11. CERN  will apply the utmost care to the selection of the winning proposals. communicate the reasons for any non-selection.
  12. The selection decisions are final and not subject to claim or appeal.

Note: All participants of the winning teams or if they are under 18 or are under the legal age of majority in the country where they are applying the parents of the participants will have to sign the CERN Consent Form and the DESY Consent Form.

About CERN:

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact and provide insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
