The Swiss Confederation offers annual scholarships for excellence in research and the arts. These government scholarships encourage international exchange and promote collaboration between Switzerland and more than 180 countries. They are awarded by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

The Swiss Confederation's excellence scholarships are intended for young foreign researchers who have completed master's or doctoral studies and for foreign artists with a bachelor's degree.

Types of scholarships

Research grant: Researchers with a Master's or Doctorate degree in any discipline who wish to carry out a research stay or to continue their doctoral or postdoctoral research in Switzerland are eligible for a research grant.
Artistic scholarships: Art students with a bachelor's degree who wish to obtain their first master's degree in Switzerland can apply for an artistic scholarship.
The criteria: 

The SFBC examines applications for scholarships according to the following three criteria:

a) The profile of the applicant;
b) the quality of the research project or the artistic work;
c) synergies and potential for future collaboration.
