The United Nations offers an internship opportunity in social science at the Office of Director of the Gender, Poverty and Social Policy Division (GPSPD) at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. GPSPD consists of three sections, namely, the Social Policy, Urbanization and Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Sections, which cover social thematic areas such as social protection, employment, demography, youth, aging, migration, health, and disability. The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Director. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. The intern will work for five days per week under the supervision of the Director.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Director, the intern will carry out the following functions:

  • Assist the Director with managing the work schedule and follow up with sections on tasks assigned by the Director;
  • Assist with work across all sections including compiling information, collecting data, undertaking analysis, developing briefing notes and proofreading documents when required;
  • Assist with organizing and coordinating meetings, workshops, conferences, and preparing coverage reports;
  • Assist with developing press releases, and generating and disseminating materials on social media;
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Director to ensure the delivery of the Division program of work.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Fluency in English is required for the Internship Program. Knowledge of another UN language, preferably French is an advantage.
