United Nations offers an internship in public information. The internship is located in the web unit of the external relations office in the mechanism’s registry in the Hague, reporting to the public information officer. The international residual mechanism for criminal tribunals was established in 2010 by the united nations to continue the jurisdiction, rights, obligations and essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) after the completion of their respective mandates. Essential Functions of the mechanism include tracking and prosecution of remaining fugitives, conducting remaining trial and appeals proceedings, support, and protection of witnesses, supervision of the enforcement of sentences and preservation and management of the archives. The mechanism has two branches, one in Arusha, Tanzania and the other in the Hague, The Netherlands. A mechanism internship is unpaid and full-time. Core working hours for interns are Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Overtime may be required to meet deadlines for specific projects. Interns work under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned. The duration of a mechanism internship can range from a minimum of three months to a maximum of six months, according to the needs of the intern’s assigned office.

  • English and French are the working languages of the mechanism. For this opportunity, excellent written and oral English is required. Knowledge of French or B/C/S (Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian) is an asset.
  • Candidates for internships in the web unit of the external relations section are required to:
  1. Be enrolled in, or have completed in the last 12 months, a relevant diploma/degree program in communications, journalism, multimedia studies or similar. 
  2. Applicants are required to have some competency in using web content management systems, basic HTML and major social media platforms.
  3. Knowledge of photography and/or audio/visual production is an asset.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Interns in the mechanism’s web unit have the opportunity to work on many different types of projects, which include work on the public website, intranet, and social media sites. 
  • Duties usually include:
  1. Assisting web unit staff in updating the mechanism websites, including page-level content, official documents, and other requested updates.
  2. Assisting with planned updates of content.
  3. Assisting in digital communications campaign planning.
  4. Developing text and research imagery for social media posts.
  5. Creating a weekly web and social media campaign analytics reports.
  6. Assisting in developing multimedia content, such as graphics, photography and audio/video editing.
  7. Other duties as assigned by the public information officer (digital communications).
