Erasmus Intern is offering a 12-month Biological Science internship for students, specifically in Gene Therapy Development and Manufacturing starting from September 2020 in Oxford, the UK. The host company, a leader in synthetic biology, is a specialist contract research organization offering services to support the discovery, development and production of biologics and cell and gene therapies. A unifying theme across the portfolio is expertise in designing DNA, optimizing expression of proteins, cell line development and improving viral delivery systems. The company is located within purpose-fitted laboratories. Currently in a phase of rapid expansion, this company will offer a truly rewarding experience.

Role and responsibilities:

This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious science student to gain first-hand experience in gene therapy development and manufacturing. Working with the process development team, you will be involved in production, purification and analysis of viral vectors used within cell and gene therapy industry. The successful candidate will have opportunity to work with cutting edge equipment and technologies within a team of dedicated scientists and engineers.

Tasks:

  1. Mammalian cell culture for suspension cell lines in aseptic conditions.
  2. Maintenance, preparation, operation and cleaning of bioreactors.
  3. Preparation of buffers and reagents used throughout the process.
  4. Purification and concentration of viral vectors using chromatography and filtration.
  5. Quantification of viral vectors using qPCR, ELISA and cell-based assays.
  6. Qualitative assessment of biological molecules and data analysis.

Desired Skills:

  1. Working towards a degree in biology, for example biotechnology, molecular biology, cell biology, pharmacology, or chemistry, for example biochemistry or related life science degree.
  2. Lab work experience relevant to biological R&D, either academic or industrial.
  3. Ability to follow established protocols with flexibility to work on experimental methods
  4. Theoretical or practical understanding of biopharmaceutical industry and R&D.
  5. Excellent communication, reporting, organization and time management skills.
  6. Languages: Good spoken and written English levels are required  (B2 onwards).
  7. Enthusiastic and ambitious.
  8. Positive attitude and eagerness to learn new skills.
  9. Diligence, attention to detail and analytical mindset.
