UN Volunteers platform is offering an online volunteer opportunity, as it is looking for 2 qualified volunteers to help translating academic articles from French to English for French Institute for Research in Africa.

Our organisation, the French Institute for Research in Africa, is a research institution of the French government based in Nairobi; it promotes research in social sciences through long-term collaborations between French, East African and international academic and research institutions. We publish working papers written by the Masters students, PhD students and young researcher we support in order to disseminate research results and promote the work of budding and junior researchers, as well as the visibility of the social, economic and political issues of the East African region. To increase dissemination, we do our best to make available these working papers both in French and English, hence our needs for translation either from French to English, or English to French; we also need, in some cases, proof-reading and rewriting.

Volunteer duration and working hours:

6-10 hours per week for overall 3 weeks.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. Fully proficient in French and in English;
  2. a previous professional experience in translation is requested;
  3. the translator should have a background in the translation of the language of social sciences, and knowledge of the African context is an advantage

Volunteer framework:

You will have to translate, from French to English, a working paper of about 12,000 words; your translation will be checked out and revision might be required from you if any questions arise; both the French and English versions will be available online on our organisation website, and your name as translator may appear if you wish so.
