International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis calls application for IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program. It is an opportunity for Ph.D. students to undertake fellowships that will allow them to attend a summer project on a topic related to the IIASA research agenda. Annually, from 1 June to 31 August, IIASA hosts up to 50 doctoral students from around the world in its Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP).

There are currently nine IIASA research programs carrying out research into the dynamics of global change. These programs use holistic approaches and effective, interdisciplinary collaborations to identify the multiple solutions needed to bring about a global transformation to true sustainability.

From June through August accepted participants work within the Institutes research programs under the guidance of IIASA scientific staff. Funding is provided through IIASA National Member Organizations.

Awards for YSSP participants :

The awards are given annually for outstanding work by participants in the institute's Young Scientists Summer Program. They provide financial support for the winners to return to IIASA for an additional three months of research.

  • The Peccei Award was established in 1984 in recognition of Dr. Aurelio Peccei's contribution to the understanding of global problems and his efforts to promote multi-national collaborative research.
  • The Mikhalevich Award was established in 1995 following the death of Academician Vladimir S. Mikhalevich, a pioneer in cybernetics and mathematical problems, who at that time was Chairman of the IIASA Council.

Program Details :

The program is designed for Ph.D. students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their PhD) working on a topic compatible with ongoing research at IIASA and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work. Participants will be working under the direct supervision of an experienced IIASA scientist in a unique interdisciplinary and international research environment. They will produce a paper (serving as the first step towards a publishable journal article) and will get the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the institutes worldwide network. Applicants can choose to work with up to two programs.

Criteria :

  • The program is designed for PhD students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their PhD) working on a field compatible with ongoing research at IIASA and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work.
  • Applicants from all countries are welcome, although IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of NMO countries.
