Job description
Job summary

Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro (www.rlalab.org ) is a group leader at Imperial College London working at the interface between synthetic biology and metabolic engineering with applications in biotechnology, biomedicine and biomaterials.

The Research Associate position will be undertaken as part of an ERC grant held by Dr Ledesma-Amaro https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/203013/four-imperial-engineers-erc-starting-grants/ . Collaborations with other members of the group and project are expected, including the co-supervision of a PhD student.

The purpose of the role is to use cutting edge system biology tools, in particular single cell technologies in order to understand the principles underpinning cell to cell heterogeneity in microbial cell factories. Such heterogeneity is often responsible for low production yields as some cells will not produce as much as others. The project will combine state of the art techniques and innovative tools with industrial bioproduction.

In addition, your generated knowledge will be used to engineer heterogeneity in microbial populations which may guide research towards the generation of the next generation of cell factories.

As a Research Associate you will carry out research programmes in microbial systems biology and synthetic biology, undertake project management and/or supervise multi-disciplinary teams. In addition, you will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals.

Duties and responsibilities

As part of a growing research group, you will:

  • Work on an exciting and timely project using state of the art techniques and methodologies in a collaborative working environment.
  • Carry out research programmes in microbial systems biology and synthetic biology, undertake project management and/or supervise multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Develop and broaden knowledge and expertise in a truly multidisciplinary project, which employs methods and principles from microbial molecular biology (CRISPR, Golden Gate, etc.) to metabolic modelling or bioinformatics.
  • Develop networking and collaboration channels and skills with both academic and industrial partners.

Essential requirements

As a Research Associate, you will have:

  • A PhD, or equivalent in Systems biology, Bioinformatics, Metabolic engineering, Synthetic Biology or a closely related area/discipline or equivalent research
  • Experience of research in systems biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, multi-omics, functional genomics, strain engineering or closely related area
  • Experience in RNAseq or other omics with Experience in single cell RNAseq or other single cell techniques
  • Experience with scientific programming languages such as Matlab or Python and/or modelling of dynamic biosystems
  • Knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles of biochemical and molecular biological systems

This post is full-time and fixed term for 24 months (initially).

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.
