The position
Applications are invited from candidates of excellence wishing to pursue a PhD degree in the field of medical and health sciences: infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance at ABAC Therapeutics in Barcelona, Spain.
The aim of the ESR Project “Development and validation of in vitro tests, and algorithms to predict toxicity” is the develop of innovative tools to deselect compounds that demonstrate antimicrobial activity after the screening process but show relevant adverse effects difficult to counteract. In order to prioritize and select high quality Hits and Lead molecules that meets multiple developability criteria, increasing the possibility to identify robust candidates, reducing technical risk and maximize success to reach the market.

The position is affiliated the INNOTARGETs - “Innovative approaches to identification of metabolic targets for antimicrobials” – project, funded through the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme under Grant number 956154.
Antimicrobial resistance is a growing medical challenge, hampering the effectiveness of existing drugs and threatening the lives of patients. Therefore, there is a pressing need for compounds that re-sensitise drug-resistant bacteria to existing antimicrobials. To address this problem, the EU-funded INNOTARGETS project will train early-stage researchers in the identification of novel metabolic drug targets in pathogenic bacteria. The project comes as a collaboration between academia and industry and will guide researchers to use innovative approaches to achieve their scientific goals. INNOTARGETS aims to provide ESRs who have scientific and technical skills which are attractive to both industry and academia, are equipped with complementary skills deemed important for research team leaders, and who have an individual profile according to their own career dreams and are capable of life-long self-directed learning. The ESR will work closely together with 11 other early stage researchers (ESRs) in the INNOTARGETS network.
About your project
You will contribute to the development and validation of in vitro tests and algorithms to determine toxicity of novel antimicrobial molecules in the project INNOTARGETS (
www.Innotargets.ku.dk). Your mission will be the development and validation of in vitro tests, computer tools, as well as the improvement of algorithms to determine and assess the toxicity of compounds that demonstrate antimicrobial activity after the screening process. The goal will be to prioritize and select high quality Hits and Leads molecules that meets multiple developability criteria (weighted profile) and therefore increase the possibility to identify robust candidates, reducing technical risk, and maximize success to reach the market.
Through secondment inside the consortium, the ESR will be exposed to research seen from the side of academic and non-academic institutions, therefore you are expected to spend up to 6 months at Heinrich-Heine-Universitaet Duesseldorf (UDUS), Germany to learn metabolic modelling, and at Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentaries (IRTA), Spain to test prediction on cell cultures.

Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD student at ABAC Therapeutics are:
- Carry through an independent research project under supervision
- Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
- Participate in active research environments including two stays at other research team
- Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
- Teach and disseminate your knowledge
- Write a PhD thesis and publish scientific papers on the grounds of your project
