Financed by the long term Methusalem funding, the KU Leuven research groups in pure mathematics collaborate within the research project "Classification, symmetries and singularities at the frontiers of algebra, analysis and geometry", encompassing the expertise of the different research groups involved and focusing on some of the most challenging problems in algebra, analysis and geometry. In this large scale research project that started in 2016, several PhD students and postdocs are employed. We organize colloquia, seminars and advanced courses. In this stimulating environment, all researchers are exposed to a broad spectrum of mathematical research with several collaboration opportunities.

Responsibilities

We are looking for motivated post-doctoral researchers with a strong research record in one of the following areas of pure mathematics.

  • Algebraic geometry
  • Classical analysis
  • Differential geometry
  • Functional analysis
  • Group theory

The successful candidates will develop their own research program in pure mathematics. Special attention will be given to applicants who propose a research plan that builds bridges between two or more of the areas mentioned above. A more detailed description of the main research topics of the pure mathematics research groups at KU Leuven can be found here: https://wis.kuleuven.be/methusalem-pure-math/methusalem-lines-of-research.

Postdocs have the opportunity to participate in the guidance of PhD students. They are expected to animate the mathematical research environment by organizing working seminars, advanced courses, etc. Postdocs have a limited amount of teaching duties.

We strive to improve the gender balance in the pure mathematics research groups and encourage female candidates to apply.

Profile

PhD in mathematics with a strong research record in one of the areas mentioned above. PhD students who will obtain their PhD before the fall of 2021 can apply. Candidates should be fluent in English. No Dutch knowledge is required.

Offer

We offer a three year postdoc position with a competitive salary, a budget for conference participation and short research stays in other institutions, health insurance and social benefits for the postdoc and her/his accompanying partner and/or children.

Interested?

In the online application (link below), you have to upload exactly three pdf files.

File 1. Motivation letter.

File 2. CV, including a complete list of publications, the names of three references (these colleagues do not have to write a reference

letter now, but might be contacted by the hiring committee) and the (tentative) date of the PhD defense. The PhD manuscript itself and the

publications themselves should not be included.

File 3. Research plan for the next three years.

Interviews of candidates on the short list will take place on line on 4 and 5 February 2021 in the afternoon (Belgian time).
