Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to work on antibody design and in vitro affinity maturation within the Chemistry of Health, Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge. This post is based in the lab of Dr Pietro Sormanni, whose group develops data-driven technologies of rational antibody design using a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses computational method development and in vitro experiments.

The successful candidate will work on a research project to set up a platform that combines cutting-edge design to target specific epitopes, in vitro affinity maturation, next-generation sequencing, and computer-guided selection of candidates with high developability potential, for the rapid and reliable discovery of therapeutically relevant antibodies.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD (or be about to obtain one) in biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology or related disciplines.
  • Experience in library construction and screening with phage/yeast or other display techniques, ideally applied to antibody fragments or nanobodies.
  • The ability to work well as part of a highly diverse and multinational team, including with students.
  • Excellent time management, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Experience in NGS sample preparation is highly beneficial.
  • Some knowledge of the python programming language and/or of NGS data-analysis is desirable.

As a Research Associate you should be highly motivated and able to work independently in a multidisciplinary laboratory environment. You will ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times, maintaining accurate and complete records of your findings. You will present your findings to colleagues and at conferences and will be expected to submit publications to peer-reviewed journals and to attract external research funding. The host laboratory has a strong personal and professional development policy, and assistance and support will be offered to candidates who wish to apply for research fellowships or develop their professional skills over the course of their employment.

The work will be based in the Chemistry of Health (CoH), a new building that opened in September 2018 housing state-of-the-art facilities. The CoH, which is home to the Centre for Misfolding Diseases and comprises four research groups, constitutes a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment. This is a unique initiative, which brings together fundamental and applied research with translational activities, and it involves about 100 scientists with expertise ranging from medical sciences to applied mathematics.

The post will be available from January 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter.
