Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Computational Imaging research group for a three-year position, on the subject of Real-time analysis of volumetric data acquired from X-Ray imaging.

Job description

The Computational Imaging group is looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher with an interest in machine learning technologies for real-time analysis of 3D volumetric data.

The postdoc candidate will participate in the project “Universal Three-dimensional Passport for process Individualization in Agriculture (UTOPIA)". The goal of the UTOPIA project is to research and develop a next generation in-line 3D X-ray scanning of agricultural products. UTOPIA combines the expertise of CWI on 3D image reconstruction and machine learning with in-depth knowledge on agricultural products from Wageningen University and Utrecht University and industrial partners in high-volume production systems for processing fruits (GREEFA) and poultry (Meyn).

The postdoc position will advance state-of-the-art machine learning based feature detection techniques, with the aim to extract morphological information from the 3D internal representation of a food product. By linking morphological information to functional properties, real-time decisions related to quality control can be made during processing of the product.

Requirements

Candidates are required to have a PhD degree in computer science, mathematics, electrical and electronic engineering, or related fields.  Candidates are expected to have a keen interest in computational imaging and a proven knowledge in machine learning for image processing, and to have an excellent command of English.

Terms and conditions

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary for an employee on a full time basis, depending on relevant work experience, ranges from € 3,653 to € 4,452. The appointment will be for a period of three years.
Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling.

Information and application

Applications should include a detailed CV, a motivation letter, and a digital copy of the PhD thesis. The application deadline is April 1st, 2021, but the application process may close sooner if a suitable candidate is found.

For residents outside the EER-area, a Toefl English language test might be required.

The mission of CWI is to conduct pioneering research in mathematics and computer science, generating new knowledge in these fields and conveying it to trade, industry, and society at large. CWI is an internationally oriented institute, with 160 scientists from approximately 30 countries. The facilities are first-rate and include excellent IT support, career planning, training, and courses.  CWI is located at Science Park Amsterdam that is presently developing into a major location of research in the natural sciences in the Netherlands, housing the sciences of the University of Amsterdam as well as several other national research institutes next to CWI.

About Research group

Our research group is developing the next generation of 3D imaging – enabling scientists to look further into objects of all kinds. Based on mathematics, algorithms and numerical solution techniques, our approach is interdisciplinary, combining aspects of mathematics, computer science and physics. We pride ourselves on the versatility of our solutions, and our algorithms can be applied to a wide range of imaging in science, medicine and industry. In Computational Imaging, it’s our goal to constantly push the boundaries of research. By combining advanced image acquisition, parameter estimation, and discrete tomography algorithms for example, we are able to develop workflows for 3D electron microscopy at atomic resolution.
