Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to conduct exciting new experimental research on single and two-phase flows relating to rotating machines thermal management.

The applicant appointed will join the University of Nottingham’s Gas Turbines and Transmissions Research Centre (G2TRC), home to the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Transmissions Systems.  They will join a team of around 50 researchers, academics, engineers and technicians working on a variety of aero-engine transmission related projects.

G2TRC is conducting exciting research investigating fundamental flow and heat transfer phenomena to support the formulation of two-phase flow strategies for engine transmission systems.  The successful candidates will learn a range of state-of-the-art experimental techniques, including advanced optical methods to make vital measurements in an existing test facility. These measurements will be used to inform CFD model developments and the successful candidate would be expected to work with CFD research engineers within a team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated person with a rigorous approach to research. Applicants should have, or be expected to gain a high 2:1, preferably a 1st class honours degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related degree. A good knowledge or experience in fluid mechanics with a keen interest in experimental multiphase flow applications is essential as is the ability to work well in a team.

The PhD studentship will cover fees and stipend for a UK or EU citizen for 3.5 years. Due to funding restrictions this studentship is only available to UK and EU citizens.  Candidates should be able to start as soon as possible.

Due to the nature of this post, all offers of a studentship will be subject to the appropriate level of security clearance and an independent verification of unspent convictions obtained by means of a Basic Disclosure Certificate obtained from Disclosure Scotland, or an overseas police check.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr David Hann (David.Hann@nottingham.ac.uk).

Applications with a CV, a brief statement of your research interests, and the names and email addresses of two referees should be sent to Dr David Hann: david.hann@nottingham.ac.uk
