Job description
Job summary

The Electrochemical Science & Engineering research group are looking to hire a researcher to develop physics-based models for lithium-ion batteries, which will be capable of capturing the underlying physics behind performance and degradations.

The coupling of more than one degradation mechanism requires a physics-based approach, but such models can be too slow and mathematically complicated to embed in a multi-dimensional thermally coupled model that needs to be solved over many thousands of cycles to simulate long term degradation.

Funded by a major international mobile phone company, the purpose of this post is to develop a modelling tool capable of predicting the onset of the transition between slow and fast degradation.

Our research group is interdisciplinary and is currently spread across four different departments within Imperial College London. We work at the interface between science and engineering of electrochemical devices. With over 50 postdoctoral & postgraduate researchers, we are a vibrant team with industrial and academic contacts.


Duties and responsibilities

  • You will primarily be developing models for lithium-ion batteries.

  • You will be working with the wider experimental team to gather data for model parametrisation and validation

  • You will assist in the planning of the research and assist with the publication of findings.


Essential requirements

  • ­You should have a degree in a relevant subject area. Completing a PhD (or equivalent) in a pertinent area would be helpful but is not a requirement for appointment as a Research Assistant.

  • You must have experience of working in a research environment

  • Experience of Multiphysics modelling essential, as is a knowledge of lithium-ion batteries

This is a fixed term position for up to 12 months in the first instance. The start date of this position is the 1st April 2021.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.
