Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

At the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the FREIA division is responsible for the FREIA laboratory and performs research towards future particle accelerators with special focus on the superconducting spoke linac section of the European Spallation Source (ESS). FREIA's activity is focused on testing for ESS, spoke cavities and RF power stations, typically 400 kW per cavity. Other projects plan to use the ESS linac to generate a very intense neutrino beam as well as the build-up a new THz Free Electron Laser. FREIA will also host smaller experiments within accelerator physics and instrumentation development. The facilities in microwave engineering (Ångström campus and FREIA Laboratory) include a fully equipped clean room of 2,000 m2, microwave CAD (ADS, CST, HFSS), measurement equipment (VNA, spectrum analysers).

Duties/Project description: the research project will include a mix of theoretical and experimental work, with specialization on advanced high-power microwave engineering. The research will therefore profit significantly from the excellent measurement infrastructure available at FREIA laboratory and Ångström laboratory. The candidate will have the opportunity to study the design of high efficiency RF and microwave solid state power amplifiers (SSPA) and combiner at high power (kW) based on novel high-power transistors and to investigate novel power combination strategies, up to several hundred kW, towards improving the overall efficiency of microwave power stations for particle accelerators and other applications. More specific duties:

  • Development of high efficiency solid state power amplifiers (SSPA) at high power (kW).
  • Development of low losses high power combiners.
  • Characterization of novel high-power transistors.
  • Participate in the testing of RF cavities and the operation of the FREIA laboratory.
  • Participate in the development of the RF systems for national and international accelerator projects such as ESS, CLIC and THz FEL.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Additional qualifications: We are looking for qualified and motivated candidates with a strong interest in accelerator physics and/or microwave engineering. The applicant should preferably have experience in calculation techniques and experimental methods or microwave engineering and amplifier design. The candidate shall have completed his/hers PhD in Electrical Engineering (E) with classes in microwave engineering, alternatively Physics (F) or equivalent. Excellent ratings are an advantage. The candidate should preferable have experience with the use of a microwave network analyser (VNA), software for calculating EM-fields like HFSS, CST or similar and be familiar with the main concepts that are fundamental for amplifier design, and be able to apply for substantial research grants from external sources. Very good oral and written proficiency in English is a requirement as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team. The project includes travel for research and to conferences, details are available on request.

Application should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, CV, copies of certificates and diplomas, MSc thesis, PhD diploma and other documents which the applicant wishes to refer to. The applicant is invited to provide names and contact details of referees and/or attach recommendation letters.
