The School of Medical sciences at Örebro University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in immunology for a fixed-term appointment.

Subject area

The position is in Medical sciences with focus on cellular immunology and vascular disease.

Background

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common manifestation of atherosclerosis, affecting arteries in the leg, and is highly prevalent in the elderly population. Increasing evidence suggests that gut microbiota and gut microbe-derived dietary metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) from certain diet is associated with the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in cardiovascular disease, however their role in pathogenesis of peripheral arterial disease is unknown. Despite its high prevalence (20% in over 60 year of age in Sweden), PAD remains poorly diagnosed and receives less attention in scientific literature compared to coronary artery disease. With support from the Knowledge Foundation, Örebro University together with business community is investing in a clinical research study aimed to investigate interactions between gut microbiota, diet metabolite and inflammation in peripheral arterial disease.

The position is part of a strong research environment, Cardiovascular research centre (CVRC) at Örebro University (https://www.oru.se/english/research/research-environments/mh/cardiovascular-research-centre-cvrc/. The main aims of the research environment are to significantly strengthen the cardiovascular research through genuine translational research and collaboration between basic and clinical scientists at Örebro University and Örebro University Hospital, and to create unique multidisciplinary projects in the field of cardiovascular research.

Örebro University is a modern and one of the fastest growing university with internationally prominent research. In year 2020, Örebro University is placed at 75 when Times Higher Education ranked the young universities in the world and was placed at 30 when looking at the citation rate per se. Örebro University is a state university, which entitles to several benefits such as extended holiday and generous occupational pension. Employees also receives health and wellness coupons. https://www.oru.se/english/working-at-orebro-university/why-work-at-orebro-university/

Duties and responsibilities

The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research/artistic skills. The applicant will be involved in formulating and testing the scientific hypothesis with experimental work, presentations and preparation of publications. The applicant will be responsible for research, academic and administrative activities and expected to adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques, test hypothesis and analyse data from a variety of sources.

The studies will include work on understanding interactions between gut microbiota and gut microbe-derived dietary metabolite TMAO and immune responses, how these responses contribute to pathogenesis in peripheral arterial disease. The applicant will work on clinical material for ex vivo and in vitro studies. The postdoc candidate is expected to work independently, to take the responsibilities of the execution, organization, and development of the research project, to generate and document experimental results, and to report project progresses to the team leader regularly. The applicant is expected to supervise students and be involved in some administrative tasks in the lab. This study will be conducted in close collaboration with professor Allan Sirsjö at CVRC, associate professor Ignacio Rangel at Nutrition-Gut-Brain-Interaction Centre (NGBI) Örebro Univeristy, clinicians, industrial partners, and researchers in our research network.

Eligibility

Eligible for the appointment as postdoctoral researcher are applicants holding a doctoral degree in biomedicine or similar. The doctoral degree should have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree prior to that may however also be considered if special grounds exist (leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical duties, an elected position in a trade union, or other similar circumstances).

Assessment criteria

General assessment criteria include good interpersonal skills and an ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to perform the duties well. Particular importance shall be attached to the qualities enabling the candidate to contribute to the future development of both research and education. A demonstrated ability and desire to pursue an academic career is also of importance.

The ideal candidate should be capable of generating novel ideas, and possess skills to plan, manage, evaluate and execute research projects with a high degree of independence. The candidate should have proven knowledge and skills in human cellular immunology. In-depth knowledge and experience in multi-parameter flow cytometry acquisition and sorting, multiplex protein assays, in vitro and ex vivo primary cell culture with stimulation-based assays and common cell and molecular biology techniques is required. Knowledge and experience in working with human faecal material and gut microbiota analysis is an advantage. Importance is also attached to documented experience in translational research.

The candidate should be well organised, innovative and have the ability of strategical thinking. Good soft skills and cooperative attitude are essential as the applicant will work in collaboration with other researchers in our research network and with our business partners. The ability to initiate and maintain networks to long-term collaboration is highly appreciated. Competence in both written and oral communication of research in English is a prerequisite for the position. In addition, personal suitability will be a factor in the selection process.
