In the Science, Engineering and Technology Group, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture of KU Leuven, there is a full time academic position (ZAP) available in the field of “Construction, Structure and Reuse in Architectural Design”. For the section Design & Engineering of Construction of Architecture (DECA) at the Sint-Lucas Brussels and Ghent campus. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent interdisciplinary research record, competence in academic management and education, and familiar with the professional field. You will be part of a university that is systematically highly ranked for research and education quality by independent accreditation committees. The structure of KU Leuven combines faculties and research departments in a multi-campus model. The Faculty of Architecture consists of the academic architecture programmes (interior architecture, architecture, spatial design and urban planning and the educational master in design sciences) on the Sint Lucas Brussels-Ghent campus. The faculty is responsible for the organisation of educational activities (www.arch.kuleuven.be). The Faculty is driven by a carefully curated diversity of design practices and is known for its forward-looking education that cultivates a freedom of exploration and experimentation (www.architectuur.kuleuven.be). There are currently about 2200 students, of which around 300 are international students. The Department of Architecture is responsible for the research in architecture, interior architecture, urbanism and spatial planning at the Faculty of Architecture (campus Sint Lucas Brussels-Ghent) and the Faculty of Engineering Sciences (Leuven campus). The department is an international expertise centre in these domains and the research is led by numerous professors and research groups with around 150 (international) PhD students (www.architecture.kuleuven.be). Both teaching and research are carried out across the locations in Brussels and Ghent by a corps of about 300 people.

You commit to take the lead in the academic management, you will participate in the further development of the architecture programmes and are also willing to take up a role in scientific and societal engagement. In addition, you play an active role in the image and profiling of the faculty and department with regard to current and new students and the broad professional field. This can be done through participation in public performances, information days, introductory moments, etc.

This profile fits within the ambition of the department to contribute to the challenge to move towards a more sustainable building stock, and more specifically by improving the current performance of the existing buidings and acknowledging the value of the materials present in the existing stock through reuse.

Your main workplace is determined by mutual agreement The Department of Architecture is active on campuses in Brussels, Ghent and Leuven. 

Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.

To facilitate scientific onboarding and accelerate research in the first phase a starting grant of 100.000 euro is offered to new professors without substantial other funding, appointed for at least 50%.
