This program, like its predecessor, will introduce participants to mediation theory and skills and will examine the impact of culture and context on the mediation approach adopted. Students will study conflict resolution process through multinational examples and perspectives and will examine challenges in designing and delivering dispute resolution initiatives in the dynamic context of emerging democracies, as well as mature, but adversarial, legal cultures. As the use of mediation grows around the world and as dangerous conflicts continue to proliferate, the relevance of this program, which addresses the development of collaborative dispute resolution processes, becomes more and more heightened.
The continuation of this course also provides an opportunity to build connections for CEU faculty and to offer a convenient mediation training for local students. It is more and more standard, at least in U.S. law schools, to include programs in ADR and mediation. Ideally, this course can play a much needed role in building capacity for the development of university training curricula as well as practical training in mediation, both at CEU and for institutions connected with our student participants.
Based on feedback from the 2017 program, in 2018 we intend to strengthen the curriculum by expanding course coverage of group conflict. Using facilitation exercises which build on the program’s core mediation model, we will prepare students to manage multi-party complex conflicts.
Among the U.S. faculty for the program are certified mediation trainers and notable ADR scholars. Part of the program design is to give participants the tools to both mediate themselves and to deliver mediation training that is culturally sensitive to the many different environments from which students come.
Undergraduates without a university degree will not be considered.
The language of instruction is English, thus all applicants have to demonstrate a strong command of spoken and written English to be able to participate actively in discussions at seminars and workshops. Some of the shortlisted applicants may be contacted for a telephone interview.
