Scholarship Description:

Professor Mike Walker OBE is a name synonymous with the Information Security Group (ISG) at Royal Holloway. Professor Walker’s enduring academic connection with Royal Holloway began in 1966 and he successfully completed his BSc in Mathematics, before becoming the second PhD student to be supervised by Professor Fred Piper, who founded the ISG with which Professor Walker was to have a lifelong association. He obtained his PhD in 1973.

Throughout his career in industry, Professor Walker maintained his keen interest for academic research and for many years he held the Vodafone chair as Professor of Telecommunications at Royal Holloway, as part of the ISG. In 2002, Professor Walker was instrumental in founding the ISG Smart Card Centre which continues today.

Scholarship Benefits:

The Royal Holloway, University of London, will provide the award amount of a £12,000 tuition fee discount for the home or international students.

Eligibility Criteria:

You must have achieved, or be on target to achieve, a minimum of a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent, and not have the financial means to undertake further study without this scholarship. You will need to clearly demonstrate this in the application.

You must have an offer to study for one of the following Royal Holloway Masters courses: 

Information Security

  • MSc Information Security
  • MSc Information Security with a Year in Industry

Computer Science

  • MSc Computer Science by Research
  • MSc Artificial Intelligence
  • MSc Computational Finance
  • MSc Data Science and Analytics
  • MSc Machine Learning

Mathematics

  • MSc Mathematics for Applications
  • MSc Mathematics of Cryptography and Communications

Application Procedure:

You must provide a supporting statement of no more than 400 words (please note that statements that exceed the word count will automatically be rejected), which should include: 

  • academic achievements and other activities you are particularly proud of and why these really matter to you;
  • why you have chosen to do the degree you have applied for; 
  • your future aspirations and how the scholarship will help you achieve these and contribute to society;
  • from a financial standpoint, what impact this scholarship would have on your education;
  • any special personal or family circumstances affecting your requirement for financial assistance.

Your statement will be judged on how effectively and convincingly you respond to the above.

As well as your statement, you will need to upload your most recent grades transcript from your undergraduate degree. Any applications that are submitted without an uploaded transcript will be rejected.
