The call for faculty applications is now open! Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) is now accepting faculty project submissions for Summer 2023. Submit your projects by June 8, 2022, at 1 p.m. PT.

The call for student applications for the summer of 2023 will be launching in summer 2022.

Mitacs Globalink Research Internship is a competitive initiative for international undergraduates from the following countries and regions: Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, Tunisia, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States. From May to October of each year, top-ranked applicants participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, from science, engineering, and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.

Mitacs Globalink Research Internships are currently available at over 70 universities across Canada. For more information, please see our list of academic partners.

Globalink Research Internship alumni interested in returning to Canada for graduate studies are eligible for the Globalink Graduate Fellowship.

Overview of GRI cycle and important dates

April to June 2022	Faculty application: Faculty submit research projects to Mitacs. Project proposals are due June 8, 2022 by 1 p.m. PT for 2023 Globalink Research Internships.
July to August 2022	Faculty application vetting: Projects are reviewed by Mitacs and decisions communicated to professors. All successful projects are made available to student applicants in an online database.
August to September 2022	Student application: International students submit applications and select research projects from the online database.
October 2022	Student application vetting: Mitacs conducts an eligibility review of student applications.
November 2022 to January 2023	Matching: Mitacs provides professors with a shortlist of student candidates for their project. Professors are then asked to review student applications, conduct interviews and then rank the applicants in order of suitability. Mitacs collects student and professor rankings, then finalizes offers to students. Final results are announced in February.
February to April 2023	Pre-internship preparation: Successful students start working with their Canadian host professors to arrange pre-internship details while Mitacs oversees logistics and coordinates with university administrative offices.
May to October 2023	Internship: Globalink research interns arrive in Canada and work with supervising professors for 12 weeks on their research project.

Faculty eligibility criteria

In order to be eligible for hosting interns as part of the Globalink Research Internship program, you must:

Have one of the following status at an eligible institution: Full professor, Associate professor, Assistant professor, Adjunct professor, Emeritus professor
Be able to supervise international students at your institution
Be able to host interns within the stipulated dates of the GRI program: Internships must between May 1 and July 31 and must be delivered over the course of 12 consecutive weeks

Matching process and evaluation criteria

Project proposals are submitted to Mitacs, reviewed, and upon acceptance, entered into an online database.
At the time of application, students must select a minimum of three and a maximum of seven research projects from the online database.
The Mitacs Research team scores each student application based on criteria including, but not limited to, CGPA, research experience, reference letter, funding constraints, etc. and ranks students based on their score.
A shortlist of students is generated for each project based on their selection and their score.
Faculty are invited to review shortlisted student applications and to contact students to conduct interviews. Faculty and students review and rank one another for a possible match.
Mitacs collects the feedback from faculty and students and determines suitable matches based on the student’s and professor’s rankings and other factors, including the student’s score.

Logistics and student funding

Mitacs, in partnership with our partners, oversees and provides funding to successful students for the following:

Flight and student visa reimbursement
Accommodation and daily stipend
Medical insurance for the duration of the internship
Coordination with host institutions’ administrative offices to ensure a smooth arrival and registration process
Selection of a Globalink Mentor to assist with tasks including picking up students from the airport, escorting them to their residences, organizing social events, and acting as an emergency contact
Professional skills courses
Opportunities such as conferences, workshops, industry expos and tours, as well as other networking events

Roles and responsibilities of the supervisor

Host professors must ensure the following is in place for their Globalink research intern prior to the start of the internship (as required):

Research supervision
E-mail and internet access
Lab and/or office space
Software or hardware
Any safety or orientation information required for the project

Globalink research interns are expected to work 40 hours per week on their research project. During the internship, Globalink Research interns may be invited to attend industry and/or government relations events, professional skills training courses, or conferences. Every attempt will be made to schedule these events outside of working hours, and interns should obtain their supervisor’s approval should they have to miss work to participate.

All parties involved with the Mitacs Globalink program must comply with the Canadian host university’s policies regarding the ethical conduct of research and scholarly activities. Any issues or disputes around research or academic misconduct will be subject to the host university’s processes following their institutional policies.

Where do I start?

Mitacs encourages you to start working on the following items before the call opens:

Review all eligibility criteria: in addition to the general GRI requirements, there may be specific eligibility criteria for each country and international partner organization
Confirm that your passport issued by your home country is valid until at least January 2023. (You are welcome to submit an application if you don’t currently have a valid passport. However, you will need to provide valid passport information if your application is approved).
Obtain a reference letter from a professor. Please download the reference letter instructions. All reference letters must follow the instructions provided.
Update your CV: You can submit your own CV or download the Mitacs template
Obtain your academic transcripts (in either English or French). If your university or institution cannot provide transcripts in either language, you are responsible for getting them translated and notarized. Transcripts must be included in your application.
English or French language proficiency tests may be required for some countries. Please check your country’s details for more information.

In the application, you will also be asked about:

Your academic discipline, program, and other educational information
Your research interests, skills, and achievements
Your reasons for pursuing research in Canada

Eligibility requirements for 2022

Applicants must:

Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application
Be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or combined undergraduate/master’s program at an eligible institution (see list of eligible institutions by country)
Have one to three semesters remaining in their program as of Fall 2022
Meet the grade requirements for their country of study (see GPA requirements for each international partner)
Apply to a minimum of three and a maximum of seven projects and ensure selections are from at least three different Canadian provinces
Be fluent in the oral and written language of the project (English and/or French)
Be available to complete an internship lasting 12 consecutive weeks between May 1 and October 31
