The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is proud to honor the contributions of continuing generations of immigrants and refugees to the United States. This program annually supports thirty New Americans, immigrants or children of immigrants, who are pursuing graduate school in the United States and who are poised to make significant contributions to U.S. society, culture, or their academic field. Each Fellowship supports one to two years of graduate study in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program in the United States. Over the two years of the Fellowship, Fellows are required to attend the annual Fall Conference in New York City, which is fully paid for by the program. The Fall Conference takes place over a weekend in late October and is an opportunity for the new Fellows to get to know one another and the Fellowship staff, alumni, and community, celebrate, and examine the New American experience. In addition, the director or deputy director of the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships will visit each Fellow on their respective campus during the first fall semester of their Fellowship. The Fellowship funding should allow Fellows to focus on their studies full-time, which is why Fellows are not able to work full-time during their graduate program. Finally, Fellows are required to remain in good standing in their graduate program while receiving funding. At the close of their two years as an active fellow, Fellows must submit an exit report. More details on the visit and the requirements of the Fellowship are provided when selected applicants sign a contract with the Fellowship. Each award is for up to a total of $90,000. Each Fellow receives $25,000 in stipend support a year (all stipend awards are capped at $50,000 per year), as well as 50 percent of required tuition and fees, up to $20,000 per year, for one to two years. The first year of Fellowship funding cannot be deferred. The competition is merit-based. Selection criteria emphasize creativity, originality, initiative, and sustained accomplishment. The program values a commitment to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The program does not have any quotas for types of degrees, universities or programs, countries of origin, or gender, etc.

Eligibility: To be eligible, applicant's birth parents must have both been born outside of the U.S. as non-U.S. citizens, and both parents must not have been eligible for U.S. citizenship at the time of their births. In addition to the above, one or more of the following must be true of the applicant by the fellowship application deadline: applicant is a U.S. citizen by birth and one of the following is true: both birth parents were born abroad as non-U.S. citizens and were not eligible for US citizenship at the time of their births applicant was raised by only one of their birth parents - the parent that raised them was born abroad as a non-U.S. citizen and the second birth parent was not a part of their life growing up and they had no contact with them applicants was born abroad as a non-U.S. citizen and one of the following is true: applicant has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen either on their own or as a minor child under the application of one of their parents applicant was born outside of the U.S. or one of its territories and was subsequently adopted by American parents and was awarded U.S. citizenship due to this adoption applicant is in possession of a valid green card applicant has been granted asylum or refugee status in the U.S. If none of the other categories apply and applicant was born abroad, they must have graduated from both high school and college in the U.S. (this includes current and past DACA recipients) Applicant must meet the following academic standing stipulations: have a bachelor's degree as of Fall 2024 be applying to or already enrolled in a graduate program be enrolled in or plan to enroll full-time in an eligible graduate degree program for the academic year not have begun the third year of the program as of the application deadline applicants with previous graduate degrees are eligible Applicants must be under 31 years old by the application deadline.
