Girls on Boards Program 2018, Canada

Launched in 2009 at the Clinton Global Initiative, G(irls)20 places young women at the centre of decision- making processes. Through our signature programs, Global Summit and Girls on Boards, we make strategic investments in young women through education and training, building networks, and access to unparalleled opportunities at home and abroad. While advocating for change at the global level through the annual G(irls)20 Global Summit, we are invested in changing the status quo for women at decision-making tables in communities across Canada by placing Girls on Boards

While advocating for change at a global level, we work at the community and individual level by making strategic investments in girls and women, aged 15-25 in 20+ countries. We do this so they can pursue opportunities at home and abroad.  In partnership with the private sector, social profit sector and individuals, we are able to provide skills building workshops (entrepreneurship, financial preparedness, communications, technology navigation, leadership, etc.); a global Summit; global mentorships; and, coaching so that each of our participants can launch their own program/initiative to empower others. G(irls)20 is also the driving force behind Fathers Empowering Daughters, Bootcamp For Brains and Girls on Boards.

About Girls On Boards

Girls on Boards, launched in 2017, places community minded, motivated and trained young women living in Canada, between the ages of 18 -25, on non-profit governance boards in their communities. T After completing online trainings and several months of coaching with a G(irls)20 approved coach, young women (“Future Board Members”) begin their 1-year term on the board.

What else is involved?

Future Board Members take the online DiverseCity onBoards training which covers:

  • Board Essentials
  • Legal Roles & Responsibilities
  • Finance Fundamentals
  • Commitment to Diversity
  • Risk Management

  • Unconscious or implicit bias in the workplace
  • Gender bias interacts with race, class, age, ability
  • To conduct gender analysis on workplace policies, culture, and organizations’ programming
  • To develop policy interventions to address gender inequities

Coaching and board mentorship – Each young woman is matched with an older woman, established in her career (minimum 2+ years board experience) as well as a mentor on her board – both support the Future Board Member’s professional and emotional growth.

Private online portal– Peer-to-peer learning by sharing experiences, seeking input on challenges, sharing resources, and participate in a bi-monthly “Ask Me Anything” online panel with a board mentor.
