The school aims at training graduate students and junior scholars in methods used in Coptic manuscript studies. Lectures and seminars in topics ranging from Literature to History to Codicology and Cataloguing shall cover the most central aspects of research and help in developing skills necessary for theoretical and practical tasks in the study of manuscripts. Particular attention will be devoted to the develpment of Coptic Literature, to its “literary genres” and to the geography of Coptic manuscript production. Practical exercises will include analytical description of Coptic manuscripts.
The school is open to students and scholars of all disciplines, but some degree of knowledge of Christian Orient (not necessarily Coptic) as well as experience of study and/or research dealing with one of the oriental traditions is expected. Basic knowledge of the Coptic language is an appreciated prerequisite. The class will be taught by internationally acknowledged specialists on the topics of Literature, Bible, Manuscript Tradition, Coptic Church etc.
The Summer School in Coptic Literature and Manuscript Tradition shall be conducted in English. The classes shall take place every day from Monday (Sept. 17) through Friday (Sept. 21) 2018 at the University of Hamburg/Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures/Warburgstraße 26/20354 Hamburg/Room 0001/2002.
The participation in this Summer School is subject to registration. Up to 20 participants shall be selected from all qualified applications that will reach us before the deadline. The selected participants will be asked to pay a small fee of €170 towards tuition and learning materials. The fee shall also cover coffee breaks and lunches. All students will receive a certificate of participation and 2 ECTS credit points.
Applicants who wish to participate in the Summer School must apply by May 31, 2018. The selected participants will be notified within one week after the registration deadline. All applicants should send us the following documents (written in English):
Applicants who would like to present their own research to the teachers and participants of the Summer School (15 minute presentation; only four applicants’ proposals will be selected) should also provide:
Up to two applicants, whose research interests are particularly close to the scientific focus of the PAThs project (paths.uniroma1.it), will be selected and invited for a one-week stay at Sapienza University (second half of February 2019) in order to collaborate to the scientific activities of the project and take part to construction/implementation/ of the PAThs database.
