Twelve students from BA of Arts and Media from the Zurich University of the Arts (Switzerland) and twelve art students from Yerevan (Armenia) will be selected to participate in this joint art project in Chambarak, Armenia.

For two weeks, we will all live and work together in Armenian-Swiss mixed groups. During the first two days in Yerevan, the local art students will show the Swiss students their University, and their hometown and we will get to know each other and our art practices. Afterward, we will travel together to a small town in the periphery of the country: Chambarak. In Chambarak we all will live together during a 10 days stay (25 August – 5 September, 2018), divided into two or three groups, staying in simple accommodations with local families.

In Chambarak there is an art school, which is frequented by young people during their leisure time. This is where we will set up our joint workrooms. We will work in Armenian-Swiss mixed groups on different artistic projects, on the local situation, and on one's own position.

Within the artistic projects in Chambarak, an experimental and process-based approach has priority over finished results.

The artistic processes will be accompanied and supervised by 4 docents (Zurich, Yerevan) and there will be a special focus

●    on reflecting the artistic work in the periphery of Armenia, and Chambarak in particular (including the daily life, the central concerns, its inhabitants)

●    on the respectful collaboration beyond cultural boundaries: between artists, hosts, and local people

●    on different understandings and traditions of art/art education / the role of art

This project is in cooperation with Chambarak Art School and ZHdK Zurich University of the Arts.

artasfoundation and the Zurich University of the Arts cover the expenses of all art students’ accommodation and meals.

Chambarak:

Chambarak is a small town in the periphery of Armenia, located near the border with Azerbaijan, in the province of Gegharkunik. There are about 5800 inhabitants.

Because of the ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, it suffers from a  consequent emigration, structural weakness, and stagnation – as well as the entire border region.

Application process:

Please send your application until the 29th of June, 2018 to info@artasfoundation.ch

(1-page motivation letter in English and Portfolio (Sample of the previous works/projects max. 8 pages)).

English communication skills are required from all participants!

The art students (12 Yerevan, 12 Zurich) will be selected by an expert-jury of Zurich University of the Arts and the final participants will be announced until the 10th of July, 2018.

Further information:

Since 2012, artasfoundation – Swiss Foundation for Art in Regions of Conflict – has been collecting experiences with a joint residence and artistic work by students from Zurich and Tbilisi in Georgia. Now artasfoundation wants to continue this (artistic) exchange as part of a joint project in late summer 2018 in Armenia.

The Swiss Foundation for Art in Regions of Conflict is an independent, impartial operational foundation. Funded by donations from many members of civil society, it was established in the year 2011. The foundation initiates its own art projects and accompanies their realization. It studies the contributions unrestricted art can offer to conflict mediation and the building of peace.
