Two PhD Fellowships in Lanthanide Solution Chemistry

The positions are available as a 3 year PhD fellowship or in the Integrated MSc and PhD Scheme.  
 
Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen is offering one or two PhD scholarships in 2018 commencing in the period from 01.09.2018 – 31.08.2021. The positions are open to candidates with a curiosity-driven approach to chemistry. The candidates should be motivated and ready to take control of their own individual research project, which will be conducted in a dynamic, innovative, and multidisciplinary research group under the supervision of Associate Professor Thomas Just Sørensen. The fellowships are supported by the Villum Foundation.  

Description of the scientific environment  

The positions are in the group of Thomas Just Sørensen, Nano-Science Center & Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen. More information on the group can be found at https://sites.google.com/view/tjsgroup/home.  

Project description  

Fellowships within preparatory chemistry, each candidate should clearly indicate if they consider themselves experts within the field of organic synthesis or coordination chemistry. The main project is designing new ligands for lanthanide ions. The candidate will work on making newly tailored ligands for trivalent lanthanide ions with specific applications in mind. The candidate may work primarily with organic ligand synthesis, or primarily on studying the complexation process. All experimental work relies on coordination chemistry and various forms of spectroscopy.

Job description  

The position is available for a 3/4/5-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:  
  • To manage and carry through your research project  
  • Attend courses  
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research  
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, most likely in Oxford, Boston, Tallahassee, Durham and Berkeley
  • Work for the department
