Eligibilities

  • Graduate students who are currently enrolled (*If you have applied for graduate school for the fall semester following SASLI, you can apply for a FLAS, but you must show proof of acceptance into a graduate program prior to receiving the award) in a degree program and who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States
  • Non-students and undergraduate students are ineligible for SASLI FLAS fellowships. The same is true for international students who are not permanent residents of the U.S. If you are not eligible for a FLAS, please look into our Fee Remission options (Undergraduate students may be eligible to apply for awards for 2nd-year or higher language study through one of SASLI’s consortium members. Please contact SASLI with questions)
  • The Department of Education has prioritized students applying for the 2nd or 3rd year of study for FLAS funding.
  • Students may be granted an exception to allow study of the beginning level if the student has achieved at least intermediate proficiency in another language of the world area of specialization or has other extenuating circumstances.
  • Students who are applying for beginning-level language study will need to justify why an exception should be granted as part of their application.
  • The Department of Education has final say as to whether an exception for first year study will be granted.
Eligible Regions: Citizens or permanent residents of the United States

Application Process

  • Step 1: Fill out the online application form (see link at right).
  • Step 2: Pay the non-refundable application fee immediately after submitting the form.
  • Step 3: Send a copy of your single most recent transcript (unofficial or official) to the SASLI office (for current students and those enrolled in the last five years).
  • Step 4: Write a short statement as to why you would like to attend SASLI (one page maximum). If no transcripts are included, please address this in your statement. If this is not addressed, they will assume your application is incomplete and missing transcripts.

Please email your transcripts and statement to [email protected] If necessary, transcripts can be sent to: SASLI, B488 Medical Sciences Center, 1300 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53706.

Things to remember:

  • Applying to SASLI does not automatically make you eligible for a SASLI FLAS or SASLI Half/Full Fee Remission; this is a separate application process.
  • The SASLI application deadline is April 1, but please apply early to help ensure that the course you are interested in will be offered.
  • Your application will not be considered for admission until the $25.00 application fee has been paid and supporting materials have been received. The fee is non-refundable unless the desired course is cancelled.

Application Deadline: February 12, 2019 (30 Days Remaining)
