EdX offers a free online course on social media. In this course, learners will discover where social media came from, how they have become an integral part of our daily lives, and how this has changed the way we communicate. The course will contribute to increasing learners' understanding of social media by looking at the ways in which network communication allows users to become "social", and how this communication has been amplified with the advent of the web.

What you will learn:
By the end of this course, applicants will be able to:

  • Create a time map showing the date when social media appeared.
  • Differentiate between "Web 2.0" and participatory culture.
  • Understand the differences between the ways that both users and social media companies think about media.
  • Examine current social trends online and chart potential trends for social media.

Course outline:
Module 1: Social Media Before the Web.
Module 2: Web 2.0 and Participatory Culture.
Module 3: Social Systems.
Module 4: The Social Go Everywhere: The Mobile Web.
