The future of journalism is freelance. For a number of reasons, including drastic cuts to the number of salaried journalists, the number of freelance journalists in Europe has been growing steadily over the past 15 years. Whether journalists opt to go freelance for freedom and flexibility or simply out of necessity, the profession comes with uncertainties and challenges.
At the European Journalism Centre, our goal is to build resilience into journalism and to support and connect freelance journalists. Our research suggests that many freelance journalists are isolated and need personal connections to succeed in their job, especially in the first years.
That’s why they are testing a mentorship pilot for early-stage freelance journalists in Europe, and they would like you to be part of it!
How does it work?
In a short application, you will tell them about you and your needs and expectations from the mentorship. Based on this, they will match you with a mentor.They will put you in touch with your mentor and organise an introductory call.
The core of the mentorship will be monthly calls with your mentor. For these calls, you can discuss any challenges and ask for feedback or advice. The EJC will support you on the way. They will be present in your first session and will share on boarding information and other useful materials. After that, we will be available to help you with any questions and concerns.
As a mentee, you have the chance to pick the brain of an established freelancer and receive their support, advice and inspiration for your career.
