Queensland University offers fully and partially funded scholarships related to PhD research. These scholarships are funded by the Commonwealth Government to provide assistance for living costs to students during completion of a PhD. Scholarships are offered for projects which are aligned with recently awarded Category 1 project grants or DECRAs. Work with leading researchers, and learn to conduct research independently and think critically, while contributing to large projects of national significance.

Scholarship Amount:

  • $27,596 per annum tax-free (2019 rate), indexed annually, for three years with the possibility of two 6-month extensions in approved circumstances.
  • Stipend and Living allowances may be covered,
  • This scholarship covers tuition fees. 

Eligibility:

Applicants for this scholarship must:

  • Have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honors.
  • Not hold a Research Doctorate or an equivalent research qualification If undertaking a Research Doctorate
  • Must not previously have held a Commonwealth-funded postgraduate research scholarship.
  • Must not be receiving an equivalent award, scholarship.

Terms and conditions:

  • Read the policy on UQ Research Scholarships.
  • A domestic part-time student with carer’s responsibilities, a medical condition or a disability, which prevents them from studying full time may be eligible for scholarship consideration, on a case by case basis.
  • International students must study full time.
  • Students can be considered for scholarship only twice. Consideration can be prior to enrollment, or in the first round after the confirmation milestone is achieved.
  • In instances where the candidate is awarded a scholarship after commencement there will be no retrospective payments of this scholarship.
  • Commencement: Enrollment in the PhD program is in research quarters (not semesters); and commencement in a research quarter is fixed to a specific period. Recipients of these scholarships may commence in any research quarter.

Application Procedure:

  • Applicants are encouraged to read the definitive rules for this scholarship prior to application, in particular any specific eligibility conditions and check the FAQs if you have any questions.
  • Befor starting the application, applicants must browse the available projects, then email the Chief Investigator to discuss the project, their suitability, and the preferred educational background. Once tehy have reached agreement with the Chief Investigator, they can continue to the application online.

Documents Needed:

The following documents are required to support the application:

  1. Academic CV.
  2. Academic transcript for all post-secondary study undertaken, complete or incomplete, including the institution grading scale
  3. Award certificates for all completed post-secondary study.
  4. Evidence for meeting UQ's English language proficiency requirements (which must be valid at commencement date).
  5. A copy of your Passport.
  6. Two referee reports from persons who can best comment on your prior research experience. UQ will contact your referees directly, but you will need to enter their details into the application form.
