The University of Queensland in Australia has launched its Biotechnology PhD by research Scholarship. As a part of Professor Alan Rowan’s ARC Laureate fellowship, this project aims to understand how soft materials in the human body can be precisely modeled to produce sophisticated and responsive materials.

The interdisciplinary nature of the project and diverse background of researchers within the Rowan group will provide the candidate with access to cutting edge equipment and training in new research areas such as high-resolution microscopy, tissue culture, rheology, and bioengineering. The outcomes of this project will be applied in tissue engineering and immunology through responsive soft matter and robotics.

Selection criteria

Prerequisites:

  • Applications are invited from outstanding and enthusiastic, international and domestic graduates of high scholarly caliber as follows:
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Biotechnology with Class I or IIA honors from UQ OR equivalent OR coursework masters with approved results in the research component and a Grade Point Average of 5.5 on a 7 point scale OR at least 2 years relevant professional experience and/or past research publication output is desirable. 

English Proficiency:

  • IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6.
  • TOEFL IBT - Overall 87, listening 19, reading 19, writing 21 and speaking 19.
  • TOEFL PB - Overall 570, listening 54, reading 54, writing 59/5.
  • Pearsons - Overall Score of 64 and 60 in all sub bands.
  • BEP - A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all macro skills.
  • CES - Overall 176 and 169 in all sub bands.

The candidate should have a background in physical organic and/or polymer chemistry, with experience in structural and material characterization.

Funding and Duration

This is a partially-funded scholarship, as it covers only living stipend, at a value of $28,092 per annum tax-free (2020 rate), indexed annually for three years, with the possibility of two 6-month extensions in approved circumstances.
