The University of Canterbury opened application for its International First Year Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes and supports top-achieving international students commencing an undergraduate degree program at the University of Canterbury.

Requirements:

  1. Recipients must be full-fee-paying international students.
  2. Applicants may not be:
    • citizens of New Zealand or Australia.
    • Permanent Residents of Australia.
    • holders of New Zealand residence class visas.
  3. Applicants must be completing, or have completed on or after 1 January of the year before the year of application, a university entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a University of Canterbury undergraduate degree program. Such students who are undertaking, or have completed, a program at the UC International College are eligible to apply.
  4. Applicants, by the closing date for the round in which they are applying, must have applied for admission to the University.
  5. The scholarship is not tenable by students who have already undertaken partial study in an undergraduate degree program at a New Zealand tertiary institution.
  6. University entrance-level qualifications that permit entry into a University of Canterbury undergraduate degree program may be from secondary schools, pre-university institutions, universities, or other tertiary institutions.
  7. Home-schooled students are eligible.
  8. Programs that qualify students for entry by Advanced Standing into the Second Professional year of a University of Canterbury BE(Hons) degree program may be included.

Selection criteria:

  1. quality of achievement in a program of study.
  2. character, and evidence of leadership potential and of involvement in cultural, sport, and/or community activities.
  3. financial circumstances.
  4. strategic objectives of the University.

Conditions of acceptance:

Students who apply for the scholarship in March must take up the scholarship in the year of application. Students who apply for the scholarship in August or October must take up the scholarship in the year following the year of application.

Unless otherwise specified in the offer letter, an offer of scholarship lapses if it is not formally accepted within one calendar month of the date of the offer.

Value:

The scholarship is currently awarded with values of $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000. Up to twenty-five scholarships may be awarded.

Note: If during the tenure of a scholarship, a recipient’s immigration status changes so that he or she is no longer a full fee-paying international student, and thereby obtains a partial refund of academic fees from the University, the scholarship is withdrawn, and any scholarship money paid since the status change was recorded at the University is refunded to the University.
