The Arab Council for Social Sciences is pleased to announce the launch of the 7th edition of the research grants program in the field of “Health and Livelihood in the Arab region: Welfare, Vulnerability and Conflict” for 2020-2022. The duration of the grant is not more than 18 months for individuals and research teams (beginning in April 2020 and ending on October 2021), and not exceeding 24 months for active research groups and institutions (beginning in April 2020 and ending on April 2022). The research grants program provides a funding opportunity to support interdisciplinary research and various methodological approaches to key topics relevant to the Arab region.
Topics of Proposals:
- Health and livelihood dynamics in protracted conflict and/or everyday violence.
- Forced and economic migration, shifts in the lives of communities, attitudes to health, behaviors, and access to health systems and services.
- The role of cultural beliefs in health, cultural expressions related to the health and well-being of various social and economic lifestyles, health systems, traditions, and cultures.
- The role of religion and religious institutions in the provision of health care.
- Experiences on flexibility and fragility in the context of health and living.
- Health Care Strategies in the Arab Region.
- Biosecurity, national sense, and border control.
- Historical Approaches to Health and Living in the Arab Region.
- Study health from an institutional perspective.
- Produce knowledge about health, living, and well-being in the Arab region.
- The role of ethics in the medical profession, neo-liberal global health care ethics and policies, and research ethics in the health of vulnerable individuals and communities in the context of violence and conflict.
- Bioethics in the Arab Region.
- Health justice systems.
- Relationships between health workers (eg doctors, nurses, social workers) and patients.
- Family and health.
Eligibility Criteria:
Nationality / Residence:
- In the case of individuals: researchers must be citizens of an Arab country and residents of the region, or refugees from an Arab country and residents of the Arab region, or stateless persons from an Arab country and residents of the Arab region currently.
- In the case of research teams: At least two researchers from the team, including the Principal researcher, must be citizens of an Arab country and residents of the region, refugees from an Arab country and residents of the Arab region, or stateless persons from an Arab country and current residents of the Arab region. The other two members could be Arabs in Diaspora.
- In the case of active research groups: The group should be based in the Arab region. The Group should also present clear future plans for action in the region. At least two researchers from the group, including the Principal researcher, must be citizens of an Arab state and residents of the region, refugees from an Arab country and residents of the Arab region, or stateless persons from an Arab country and currently residents of the Arab region. The other two members could be Arabs in Diaspora.
- In the case of institutions: The headquarters of the institution in the Arab region, regardless of the country of registration. Institutions that are affiliated with foreign international organizations are not eligible to apply. The principal researcher and all researchers in the Foundation team must be citizens of an Arab state and residents of the region, refugees from an Arab country and residents of the Arab region, or stateless persons from an Arab country and currently residents of the Arab region.
Educational qualifications:
- In the case of individuals: Applicants must have a doctorate in a field of social sciences or humanities. Individual researchers who are in the early stages of their post-doctoral career are particularly encouraged to apply. Individuals expected to earn a doctorate by January 2020 are also eligible to apply.
- In the case of research teams: At least two team members, including the principal researcher, must hold a doctorate in social sciences or humanities. The other two members must have at least a Master’s degree in Social Sciences or Humanities.
- In the case of active research groups: At least two active research group members, including the lead researcher, must hold a doctorate in social sciences or humanities. The other two members must have at least a Master’s degree in Social Sciences or Humanities.
- In the case of institutions: The principal researcher in the institution must have a doctorate degree in the field of social sciences or humanities and demonstrate a successful research experience. Other participating researchers must have at least a Master's degree in a field of social sciences or humanities.
Specialties:
The grant program is open to any field of social sciences, humanities, and related and interdisciplinary fields. Basic sciences include anthropology, demography, economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, philosophy, literary studies, and art history. Associated fields and interdisciplinary areas include architecture, geography, law, public health, gender studies, education, cultural studies, media studies, development studies, and urban studies. Multidisciplinary proposals are also encouraged. However, all proposals should be based on social science theories and methodologies.
Amount of the Grant:
The Research Grants Program provides grants to individual researchers (up to a maximum of US $20,000), research teams (up to a maximum of US $35,000), and active research groups and institutions (up to US $50,000 each). Their research focuses mainly on Arab societies. Priority is given to researchers residing in the Arab region.
