Description

The UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education honours outstanding innovation and contributions made by individuals, institutions and organisations to advance girls’ and women’s education. It is the first UNESCO Prize of this nature and will be unique in showcasing successful projects that improve and promote the educational prospects of girls and women and in turn, the quality of their lives.

Eligibility

  • Prizes may be conferred upon individuals, institutions, or non-governmental organisations that have promoted the advancement of girls’ and women’s education;
  • Focus on, for example: girls’ transition from primary education to lower-secondary education and their completion of full basic education; adolescent girls’ and young women’s acquisition of literacy skills creating gender-responsive and safe teaching-learning environments, free of School-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) the development of gender-responsive teaching attitudes and practices among teachers; and adolescent girls’ and young women’s acquisition of knowledge and skills to help their smooth transition from school to work and lead a fulfilling life.

Prize

Supported by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Prize has conferred annually to two laureates and consists of an award of USD 50,000 each to further their work in the area of girls’ and women’s education.

How to Apply

  • Nominations must be submitted online in English or French and need to focus on a specific project or programme.
  • Applicants are encouraged to include relevant supporting materials such as videos, publications, CDROMs, etc.
  • All nominations must be submitted online by May 5, 2017 (midnight, Paris time) , only accessible to the UNESCO Member States and NGOs in official partnership. The two laureates will be announced by the Director-General in September 2017.
