Research area

VID Specialized University has up to two vacant position as PhD research fellow in diaconia, exclusion and injustice. Structures of exclusion and injustice prevail in all parts of the world – in various forms and to various extent. Churches and diaconal actors, inspired by approaches of empowerment, reconciliation, and transformation – and eager to contribute to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – play crucial roles in many countries and communities. In some contexts, churches might have themselves contributed to such exclusion and injustice.

The 17 SDGs reflect that improvements in the three pillars of social, ecological, and economic development – enabling also future generations to experience such improvements – are the core of sustainable development. By the wording of SDG 16 and 17, an additional pillar of governance is also included, locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.

When identifying how churches and diaconal actors can contribute to the various targets under SDG 16 on just and inclusive societies in a specific context, one must understand societal structures and power asymmetries that work towards marginalising groups of persons. Moreover, one must understand if and how churches and diaconal actors have joined forces with other actors in the relevant context, to respond to the situation.

This call invites proposals for PhD projects aiming at studying and critically analysing cases of churches and diaconal actors in contexts of exclusion and injustice and how they react to these situations. Projects that also include perspectives on climate changes, are highly welcome.

The PhD project must be written within the context of diaconal research, acknowledging that diakonia includes specific professional practices and traditions in the context of churches and diaconal organizations.

We are welcoming project proposals with an adequate understanding of the societal structures of the studied cases/contexts and with methodological approaches that in themselves seek to contribute to empowerment and reconciliation (if the churches and diaconal actors have had a role in furthering exclusion and injustice, and, if relevant, climate change) It will be an advantage to relate the proposal to one or two specific SDG targets.
