Job description

Three research positions are available to early-stage researchers in the project DYNAF, funded by the NWO Open Technology Program. DYNAF is a multi-disciplinary project performing research in computational fluid mechanics, combustion dynamics, acoustics, vibration and fluid-structure-interaction in the low frequency range. The research objective is to predict and control accurately the combustion dynamics in industrial size furnaces and boilers by means of the application of CFD simulations, laboratory experiments and industrial scale data and data processing and analysis. DYNAF is an acronym for the project title: “combustion DYNamics and Acoustic  oscillations in large industrial Furnaces and boilers”.

Within the Thermal Engineering laboratory a vacancy exists for a PhD position.

The objectives of this study are:

Generation of validation data on low frequency combustion dynamics represented by the response of the flow field and rate of flame heat release rate to a low frequency perturbation of the fuel flow. In addition a sonic thermometer will be developed for application in large furnaces in cooperation with Oxford University.

The expected results are:

(I)            Validation data on low frequency combustion dynamics in a turbulent laboratory flame.

(II)           Validation data on low frequency combustion dynamics in a Bosch domestic burner.

(III)          Sonic thermometer for application in large furnaces.

Validation data on low frequency combustion dynamics in a large industrial furnace at Duiker Combustion Engineers in Wateringen.
