Some people think of Verona primarily as a territorial University. This is indeed true as it pertains to the reasons and to the ways modern Universities have been founded in north-eastern Italy, in whose ancient history witnesses the past vivid blooming of cultural and educational activities, which eventually reached, in 1339, the official foundation of a studium in Verona ratified through a papal bull of Pope Benedetto XII. Later, under the powerful venetian sovereignty, which had replaced the brief Visconti family’s dominion, all the university activities in the territory, with a resolution of the Senate, were merged into the old University of Padova.
