The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Australia is offering the International PhD Scholar Initiative for 2020, which enables outstanding international students to join the Medical Biology PhD program. The International PhD Scholar Initiative selects students on the basis of their academic record, relevant experience, referees' reports, and a videoconference interview. Successful applicants will then be connected with prospective supervisors to select a PhD project in the student’s field of interest.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. International students who are expected to complete their current degree in mid-2020 are eligible to apply for the International PhD Scholar Initiative.
  2. Please note that Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens qualify as domestic students with the University of Melbourne and are not eligible to apply for the International PhD Scholar Initiative.
  3. Incomplete applications (including missing supporting documents) will not be considered.
  4. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted via email by January 2020 and invited to a videoconference interview in late January 2020. At this stage, shortlisted applicants will be required to provide letters of support from professional or academic referees.
  5. A four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of 80% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent; OR a master’s degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of 80% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent; or a qualification and professional experience considered to be equivalent.
  6. A research proposal.
  7. referee reports (except for applicants who have graduated from the University of Melbourne within the last 5 years).
  8. The endorsement of a prospective supervisor.

Funding:

The Institute's International PhD Scholarships provide a living allowance equivalent to the current Melbourne Research Scholarship rate. In addition, all PhD students receive the Institute’s $2000 per annum scholarship top-up plus a relocation allowance, health insurance coverage, and a university tuition fee offset.
