The Hansen Summer Institute for Leadership and International Cooperation in the US offers summer fellowships for international and U.S. students to build leadership skills and better cultural understanding to help form a more peaceful future.

What does the fellowship include?

Fellows receive hands-on training in team-building, public speaking, negotiation, mediation and working together to solve international problems. Leadership training includes meeting with political and business leaders to learn real-world skills and how to implement these skills at home after the program.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. The program is located in San Diego, CA and open to international and U.S. undergraduate and master’s students aged 20-25.
  2. Successful applicants must demonstrate leadership potential by having worked outside of class in community service, another public service, or in a non-governmental organization. A letter of reference from such a group or organization is required.
  3. Upper-division undergraduate with 2 years of college/university or graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development or related fields.
  4. Have an academic adviser verify in writing the candidate’s English proficiency. (A verification request is automatically sent to your referee with the recommendation request.)
  5. Have a valid international passport with a US visa if necessary by the time the program begins.
  6. Preference may be given to students who have never been to the United States before but all qualified students are encouraged to apply.

What is Provided:

  1. Accommodation and meals for the duration of the program, with shared rooms with participants of the same gender
  2. Transportation to/from the campus to all meetings and activities.
  3. Program materials
  4. Certificate of Participation
  5. Round trip airfare from the participant’s home town to San Diego, California. (Not to exceed $500 for economy class)
  6. $1000 award upon successful completion of the program

What is NOT provided:

  1. The cost of an international passport.
  2. Costs associated with the U.S. visa application and interview at the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate.
  3. The cost of a U.S. visa.
  4. Academic credit for participation in the Hansen Summer Institute (including fees or costs associated with academic credit)

Note: When you submit a name and email address for your academic referee, they will automatically receive an email with instructions to log in and answer a questionnaire to complete to verify your English proficiency. This verification will be submitted with their recommendation form. This is an automatic process; there is no extra information for you to provide.
