The Food System Vision Prize invites organizations from across the globe to develop a Vision of the regenerative and nourishing food systems that they aspire to create by the year 2050. The challenges seem ominous: a global population approaching 10 billion, greenhouse gasses changing our climate, pollution poisoning our soil, air, and water. Yet, there are opportunities to address them if we act together to transform our food system.

Prize Categories:

  1. Environment: The global population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050.  There is a mounting concern over climate change as it will have a significant effect on the food system. We absolutely have to protect and regenerate the environment but the challenges are formidable.
  2. Diets: Human diets are deeply intertwined with health and environmental sustainability. Our current consumption patterns are pushing planetary limits.  Globally, there has been increased consumption of sugars, saturated fats, and processed red meats; and under-consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, pulses, whole grains, seeds & nuts, and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids. After decades of decline, global hunger has been rising again since 2015.
  3. Economics: Agriculture remains one of the largest economic sectors globally.  For countries like Sierra Leone and Rwanda, agriculture’s share of GDP is 60% and 31%, respectively. Yet, even as food and agriculture underpin so many individuals’ and countries’ prosperity today, the picture changes as we look ahead in time.
  4. Culture: Cultures emerged and evolved from the very basic human need to eat. Food and culture are so tightly intertwined that it’s almost impossible to speak to a culture without a nod to its cuisine and the role it plays in spiritual traditions and community gatherings. We often rely on food to bring us back to our cultural roots and help us honor our traditions, our heritage, and our past. With population growth, globalized economies, and new technological advances, our food culture is constantly evolving. Food will continue to adapt and change, and we have the chance to direct that change.
  5. Technology: Technology is an amplifier that can be used to both empower and dismantle human communities. Too often, technologies are introduced without any thought about their long term impact. We all know that technological innovations are changing our relationship with food, on a personal, local and global level.
  6. Policy: Governments play a critical role in designing healthy public policies and creating the right environment to allow equitable access to safe and nutritious food. They shape the policies that determine food production, distribution, consumption, and disposal.

Prize:

$2 million will be distributed to the Top Visionaries, who will be eligible to receive a prize of $200,000 each. The Finalists, who will be selected after a Refinement Phase that extends from 2 March - 17 April 2020, will also:

  1. Join a cohort of Visionaries addressing systemic food issues via a virtual Accelerator and in-person convening;
  2. Collaborate with a select team of advisors and stakeholders to further refine their Visions and find pathways to actualize them;
  3. Participate in an Accelerator during which they will have access to media and storytelling training and a global platform via media exposure, in order to attract partners, connections, and other funder and philanthropic networks;
  4. Refine and amplify their Visions further;
  5. If in full compliance with the Prize Terms and Conditions, be announced as a Top Visionary and have the opportunity to participate in a recognition ceremony.
